Windows 7

We use the word 'upgrade' a lot and in different contexts. There are really three things going on here: there's upgrading from your current operating system (Windows XP or Windows Vista) to Windows 7. There's installing an "upgrade" version or "full" version of Windows 7. And then there's an 'upgrade' or 'custom' installation. In addition, you need to decide which edition of Windows 7 you want to upgrade to: Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate.
Full or Upgrade version?

If you're running Windows Vista or Windows XP, you can buy the upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate. If you're running an older version of Windows (Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows 95), a different operating system altogether, or have a computer that currently has no operating system on it at all, you'll need to buy the full version.

Want to know if you can upgrade to Windows 7? You can just download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. If you're not sure which version of Windows 7 is right for you, here's an easy way to compare versions.
Upgrade or Custom Installation?

An upgrade installation of Windows 7 is one in which your current files and programs can remain intact, so you'll be able to install Windows 7 "on top" of them. A custom ("clean") installation requires you to first back up your current files and data to an external hard drive, USB drive or network. You can't backup to the same hard drive where you're installing Windows 7, because everything on that disc will be overwritten. You'll also want to find your original application discs before you begin, since you'll need to re-install your applications (like Microsoft Office) after Windows 7 has been installed.

Even if you're doing an Upgrade installation, it's always a good idea to back up your files and data before you begin.
